Forklift Load Center Calculator: Capacity at Longer Load Centers

Forklifts are rated at a load center, usually 24 in from the fork face. Long or deep loads move the center out and cut capacity. Enter the load and see the estimate.

Forklift load center

Actual load center–
Estimated capacity–at that load center
Margin–

Estimate uses the moment method: capacity × rated load center ÷ actual load center. It assumes an evenly distributed load and the standard mast. The truck’s data plate (and any attachment plate) is the legal limit; never exceed it.

How it works

For an evenly distributed load, the load center is half its depth on the forks.

Estimated capacity = rated capacity × rated load center ÷ actual load center. It never goes above the rated capacity for shorter loads.

This is the standard moment-balance estimate. Masts, attachments and lift height change real capacity, so the data plate always rules.

Common questions

What is a 24 inch load center?

The distance from the fork face to the load’s center of gravity, 24 in for a 48 in deep pallet load.

How much can a 5,000 lb forklift lift at 36 in?

About 3,330 lb by the moment method (5,000 × 24 ÷ 36). Check the truck’s capacity plate.
